The annual ITWeb Cloud Summit will be held for the second time on Thursday 8 February 2018 at Vodacom World, Johannesburg. The event will focus on the ways in which cloud computing has moved from being considered a disruptive and threatening new technology to a globally adopted technology for all sectors. The summit will also feature talks from industry experts including Darren Bak, Lead Business Analyst for Synthesis Software Technologies.

Bak will focus on a key track of the summit: articulating the business case for cloud computing. Being able to do so is important not only for cloud-consultancy specialists such as Synthesis, but for IT heads or chief technology officers looking to encourage widespread buy-in from their colleagues.

“Getting buy-in from the right people is critical,” Bak explains. ” It’s important to have a clear-eyed picture of the value of a move to cloud for the entire business. Adopting cloud because it’s a trendy thing to do without a clear understanding of the benefits that come with it and the changes in culture that it necessitates can hamper the success of the project.”

Fortunately, the business case for cloud has become compelling. If adopted in a considered, careful manner, it can offer cost savings and improve business agility and scalability. Synthesis are Amazon Web Services’ (AWS) first accredited Advanced Consulting Partners in Africa, which means they’ve been intimately involved in the continent’s first steps towards cloud computing. It’s a perspective that’s provided exciting glimpses of the possibilities that the next generation of IT holds for African companies, but also sight of the hurdles that the technology faces.

“There are some challenges. Key to the successful adoption of cloud is knowing what you want to get out of it. It’s a hyper-scalable technology, so there’s no need to rush in and overextend yourself. Interestingly, some still view security and stability as risks, whereas in fact this is where cloud really shines if the architecture is set up by knowledgeable people. Because infrastructure is automated, security controls can be baked in through patterns and tests, maintaining continuous compliance. What you end up with is a robust system that incorporates the methods of its own verification,” adds Bak.

AWS and other cloud providers are some of the fastest-growing technology companies in the world today, and their growth increasingly includes South Africa. AWS’s Direct Connect broadband infrastructure is now available to customers in Johannesburg and Cape Town. Direct Connect is a dedicated network connection that provides South African customers with dedicated, secure and high-bandwidth connectivity to the Amazon global network, bypassing the public Internet.Cloud is here to stay, and the ITWeb Cloud Summit is the best place to learn what that means for your business.
